This workshop will equip participants with the necessary tools to listen to, compose, and interpret the rhythmic and melodic vocabulary of South Indian classical (Carnatic) music. Drummer Sameer Gupta and bassist Damon Banks will demonstrate their unique and accessible approach to Carnatic music, incorporating elements of groove, soul, and funk while respecting the traditional rules and roles of accompaniment. Bandleader Arun Ramamurthy will introduce participants to South Indian classical material, analyzing traditional Carnatic melodic frameworks, compositional structures, and calculations. By the end of this workshop, students will feel energized and inspired to explore South Asia’s vibrant and virtuosic music, tapping into their creative potential. Prior knowledge of Indian music is not required, and students are encouraged to bring their instruments. All skill levels are welcome. The Arun Ramamurthy Trio will present a concert at CJC’s Rendon Hall following the workshop.
ARUN RAMAMURTHY is a versatile violinist, composer, and educator from Brooklyn, NY. He performs South Indian classical “raga” music and blurs genres with the innovative Arun Ramamurthy Trio and other projects. Trained by renowned violinists Sri Mysore Nagaraj, Dr. Mysore Manjunath, and others, Arun has performed internationally in Carnatic and Hindustani settings. He has collaborated with notable artists such as Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Sudha Ragunathan, and Reggie Workman, among others, and has showcased his talent at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
DAMON BANKS, born and raised in The Bronx, NY, is a highly sought-after bassist and composer. Known for his adaptability and open-mindedness, Damon has worked with renowned musicians like George Benson, Peter Gabriel, and Angelique Kidjo. He has collaborated across genres with artists such as Marc Ribot, Leo Wadada Smith, and KRS-ONE. Damon’s musical journey has taken him on various creative endeavors, including performances with the Frankfurt Ballet and the Brooklyn Raga Massive.
SAMEER GUPTA is a percussionist known for his mastery of both American jazz drumset and Indian classical music on tabla. With a background in jazz studies and a co-founder of Brooklyn Raga Massive, Sameer has performed with esteemed musicians like Reggie Workman, Ron Carter, and Jon Batiste. His collaborations span a diverse range, including artists like Martha Redbone, Karsh Kale, and Pandit Krishna Bhatt. Sameer’s unique approach bridges the traditions of jazz and Indian classical music.
