This hands-on workshop delves into the art of playing drums with brushes. Open to drummers of all skill levels, this workshop focuses on developing the nuanced, expressive, and swinging approach that drumming with brushes can provide. Throughout the workshop, participants will explore brush technique, essential brush patterns for various musical styles, stylistic applications, musicality, dynamics, soloing concepts, and equipment options.
Jeff Marrs is a highly accomplished drummer with an impressive career in modern jazz. He has performed at renowned jazz venues and festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Coca-Cola Club in New York, The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, Yoshi’s, SF Jazz Center, and Davies Symphony Hall. Born and raised in Concord, California, Jeff grew up in a musical family and began playing drums at a young age. He later studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. Jeff has shared the stage and recorded with esteemed artists such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joshua Redman, and the Marcus Shelby Orchestra. He has also taught jazz drumming at various institutions, including Los Medanos College, The California Jazz Conservatory, and UC Berkeley, inspiring and mentoring students of all ages. Jeff’s dedication to both performing and teaching has left a lasting impact on the San Francisco Bay Area’s jazz community.
