There’s room in the Great American Songbook for more of the songs you love – regardless of their genre. Update your repertoire and improve your skills by adapting songs to suit your range and style. Figure out how a pop, rock, country, or folk song might work with a jazz combo and how to translate your vision from a mere “cover” to a unique, new interpretation. Choosing songs you connect with deeply will help you find your authentic voice as an artist and express yourself more fully. The instructor will provide live piano accompaniment, or students may accompany themselves.
As a vocalist and pianist, Katy is known for crossing uncharted territory between classical, jazz, and pop styles. Her voice has been featured in major motion picture soundtracks (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Catwoman, The Time Machine), TV movies and theme songs, and even in children’s toys. She has been a soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony for their concert versions of Candide, Follies, and Leonard Bernstein’s Mass; and has performed in Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Cyprus, the U.K., and the U.S. with various groups and projects. Her collaborations with dance and theatre companies include Porchlight Theatre, Word For Word, Upon These Boards, Project Agora, Copious Dance Theatre, and Requisite Dance. Katy has been the resident singing pianist at the Comstock Saloon since 2011.
