Learn the foundations of Indian rhythm and vocal percussion (konnakol), essential hand drumming techniques on traditional instruments (mridangam, ghatam, and khanjira), ways to improve rhythmic time and feel, and approaches to improvisation and composition. Directed by acclaimed Indian percussionist, composer, and educator Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy, this class is open to participants of all ages and backgrounds – no previous experience needed!
Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy is an Indian-American percussionist, composer, and educator who has emerged as a prominent figure in Indian classical and cross-genre music within the South Asian diaspora. Recognized as a “musical ambassador” by The Times of India, Rohan received extensive training in mridangam from the legendary maestro Sri. Guruvayur Dorai, studied tabla under Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music, and explored drum set techniques with Alan Hall at the California Jazz Conservatory. As a distinguished soloist, composer, and collaborator, Rohan has performed alongside renowned Indian classical musicians and Grammy Award-winning global artists. Leading The Alaya Project, an Indo-jazz-funk collective featuring acclaimed saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan and keyboardist Colin Hogan, their debut album has garnered acclaim from Jazziz Magazine, NPR, San Francisco Chronicle, and more. Equipped with a Ph.D. in musicology from the Eastman School of Music, Rohan directs the RohanRhythm Percussion Studio, mentoring students from around the world. He is the recipient of international awards and grants, including commissions from the San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Foundation, and Goethe Institute (Germany).
