Whether you’re new to jazz singing, have begun exploring vocal jazz, or have just been away from the bandstand for too long, this class will help you gain a solid practical understanding of what jazz singing is all about. In focused exercises, we’ll explore the special characteristics of jazz singing, and Andrea will make sure you’ve got a handle on fundamental skills that will allow you to get up on the bandstand with ease and confidence. During class, you’ll sing in real time using backing tracks or iRealPro, receiving individualized feedback to help you sing the songs you love with greater freedom, expressiveness, and joy. Bring your questions about singing jazz and two or three songs you’d like to work on.

About Andrea Wolper

“One of New York’s shining voices, a singer’s singer who weaves magic,” Andrea Wolper “brings songs to life, whatever their source, beginning in a milieu that begins with jazz and reaches out to embrace an expressive area that is uniquely her own.” Andrea’s performance credits in her New York home base include The Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Mezzrow, the Vision Festival, and more, and she tours in the U.S. and abroad. She is one of the “great jazz singers” listed in Scott Yanow’s book, “The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide.” Cadence magazine has described her songwriting as “easily superior,” and she has been awarded a number of composing residencies. In addition to leading her own ensembles, Andrea appears as a side person with artists across jazz genres, and her recordings as both leader and side person have been on many Best of Year lists. Andrea teaches vocal technique and coaches jazz singers in her private studio, and teaches clinics and master classes at many colleges and conservatories. Here’s what some participants in previous workshop have said about Andrea’s classes:

I loved taking Andrea’s class [Jazz Singer’s Preparedness Guide] and look forward to taking more!  She’s so supportive and knowledgeable, and helps each of us where we need more help. I learned so much!

This workshop was a wonderful experience. Andrea is a wonderful leader/teacher. She has a warm, gentle manner and the skill to help each group member find a closer relationship to the music—while also nourishing a strong group spirit. The workshop was challenging and supportive (and without pressure for us tentative types), and a lot of fun.

A wonderfully supportive group experience for people wishing to sing. Andrea is informative, talented, patient, and fun to work with. It was a joy to see how individuals progressed not only with the song material but with their ability to interpret the song and feel comfortable doing so. Lots of smiling faces.

This was my third session with Andrea Wolper. I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned in these workshops. I came to the first one very shy and hesitant but I’m gaining more and more confidence under Andrea’s watchful eyes and ears. Her comments and suggestions are very inspirational.
