Explore singing in the classic jazz idiom. In this class, you will choose a song to workshop and develop for performance. The instructor will work with you to select the right key, create an arrangement, and make the song your own by connecting to your voice and studying classic jazz approaches. Instructor Lilan Kane is a Berklee College of Music graduate who performs regularly at jazz clubs around the Bay Area and beyond.
Requirements: Students must audition by sending an audio or video recording to lilankane@gmail.com, a cappella only – no backing track. Please choose one of the following songs: There Is No Greater Love, In A Mellow Tone, or Girl From Ipanema, and sing once through a cappella.
Oakland-based soul singer and composer Lilan Kane (LEE – lawn) is authentic, on and off stage. The sultry honesty in her voice is as raw as her lyrical stories of love, life, and self-discovery. A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Kane has sold out numerous residencies at Yoshi’s Oakland and SFJAZZ, as well as performances at Minton’s Playhouse (NYC), Chris’s Jazz Cafe (Philly), French Quarter Festival (New Orleans), Concord Pavillion, The Mint (LA), Fillmore Jazz Festival and many others. Lilan has sung with Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra and opened for Hall & Oates, Lenny Williams, Freddie Hughes, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Sharon Jones, Trombone Shorty, and Morgan James.
