California Jazz Conservatory Vocal Chair, Laurie Antonioli, has been writing and recording her original lyrics for over 30 years. During this time, she has come to value the craft that goes into lyric writing as much as original ideas or personal stories. There are many ways to craft a song, and Laurie will share a variety of formats and suggestions. This course includes short lectures on the lyricists from the Great American Songbook, like Lorenz Hart and Harold Arlen, to Jon Hendricks, Joni Mitchell, Dave Frishberg, Bob Dylan, Kendrick Lamar, and beyond. There will be weekly in-class writing assignments and homework. You can find Laurie’s lyrical work starting with her first release, “Soul Eyes,” through her latest, “The Constant Passage of Time.” Open to all.
Differentiating between poetry and lyrics
Examining both universal and personal stories
Looking at some fun angles, exercises, and perspectives to produce a provocative lyric
This will be a highly interactive class, and students will compose several sets of lyrics by the end of the term.
