Are you eager to take your vocal performances to the next level? This class is for singers with at least some experience who want to develop a deeper connection to personal style, and strengthen the skills that lead to more relaxed, focused, expressive performances. A New York-based jazz singer in the trenches for some 30 years, Andrea has a gift for helping singers branch out beyond what they’re already capable of. In this safe, supportive class, you’ll work on songs you love to sing, using iReal Pro or other backing tracks, and will receive personalized feedback and suggestions you can apply on the spot and continue exploring on your own. We’ll make sure you’ve got the fundamentals in place, and explore approaches to phrasing, improvisation, and interpretation. Whether you’re feeling stuck on specific issues, have the sense that something’s missing, or simply are ready to kick things up a notch, Andrea will guide you to dig a little deeper, make discoveries, and express your songs more fully, freely, and joyfully.

“I loved taking Andrea’s class and look forward to taking more!  She’s so supportive and knowledgeable, and helps each of us where we need more help. I learned so much!”

“This was my third session with Andrea Wolper. I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned. Don’t know how she does it but she can zero in on some aspect of my performance and offer insight into what could make it more meaningful.”

“Andrea has a warm, gentle manner and the skill to help each group member find a closer relationship to the music,  while also nourishing a strong group spirit. The workshop was challenging and supportive, and a lot of fun.”

About Andrea Wolper

As accomplished with jazz standards as she is with unusual repertoire, experimental music, and improvisation, Andrea Wolper has been described as both “utterly original” and “a singer with an uncanny emotional touch for the past 50 years of jazz.” One of the “great jazz singers” included in “The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide” (Yannow, BackBeat Books), Andrea appears in her New York home base and tours in the U.S. and beyond. A few performance highlights include the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Mezzrow, Edgefest, Sons d’Hiver Festival (Paris), South African Broadcast Center Concert Hall, JazzFest Kassel (Germany), and the Outpost (Albuquerque, NM). Andrea has also made her mark as a composer and arranger. In addition to leading her own musical projects, she has worked as a side-person for an impressive roster of musicians across jazz genres, including Jay Clayton, The Heavenly Big Band, Patricia Nicholson, and William Parker (including appearing on Parker’s historic recording, “Migration of Silence Into and Out of the Tone World”). Her recordings as leader, co-leader, and side person have appeared on a number of Best-of-Year lists. She served on the board of directors of International Women in Jazz, including a stint as president, and as an advisor to the Jazz Vocal Coalition. Andrea teaches vocal technique and coaches singers in her private studio, and teaches clinics and master classes in vocal performance, improvisation, songwriting, and more.
