Wednesdays 6:30 - 8 pm 9/20 - 12/6 (11 weeks) no class 11/22

This class is designed to help you build confidence in a live performance setting with a focus on bandstand essentials for vocalists, including: creating (and understanding the elements of) a clear, readable chart (aka lead sheet); communicating with instrumentalists effectively and collaboratively; creating arrangements; experimenting with style/feel; and approaches to improvisation/vocal soloing. Bring your favorite charts (standards or originals), or select tunes from the instructor’s list of 200+ professional lead sheets (transposable to any key). Students will be accompanied by a professional pianist in weeks 1-7, a full rhythm section (adding bass/drums) in weeks 8-10, culminating in a live performance with the full trio at the end of the quarter.

Please note: This class culminates in a performance in the final week of the term (week 11). All Jazzschool student performances are free and open to the public! Please confirm your availability for the performance date (the week 11 class meeting date) before finalizing your registration in this class.

Co-bandleader, Andrea Claburn/Jua Howard Group. Artist in Residence, Ruth Asawa School of the Arts. Fully certified in Somatic Voicework, the LoVetri Method (2020). Awarded the CA Jazz Conservatory’s Mark Murphy Vocal Scholarship (2010). Classically trained in piano and violin. Extensive experience as an instructor of vocal technique, performance, improvisation, and musicianship. Private instruction faculty, CJC (2015-present). Studied with Suzanne Pittson, Sandy Cressman, Laurie Antonioli, Raz Kennedy.
