Each instructor will present their approach to learning and soloing over the selected tunes or progressions.

In this session, noted author and educator Bert Ligon shares ideas for soloing over the beautiful jazz standard “Stella by Starlight.”

About Bert Ligon

Bert Ligon, the director of jazz studies at the University of South Carolina, is a distinguished American jazz musician, composer, and educator. He holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music in jazz piano performance and arranging from the University of North Texas. Ligon’s impact extends beyond the classroom, as he has authored several influential books, including “Jazz Theory Resources Vol. 1 & 2,” “Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony,” and “Comprehensive Technique for the Jazz Musician.” His compositions have been featured in various contexts, from big band arrangements to film and television. Ligon’s teaching style combines clarity, patience, and humor, making him a respected figure in jazz education.
