Pentatonic scales can be put to use in a wide range of contemporary musical settings. In this hands-on course, pianists develop familiarity and practical knowledge of various pentatonic scales and modes for use in improvisation and composition. Pentatonic scales derived from major and the various minor scale forms are discussed, in addition to “mutated” pentatonics and those found in various styles of world music.
Prerequisites: knowledge of major and minor scales and basic jazz theory.
