Join us for an enlightening workshop exploring the enduring influence of jazz in shaping modern music, led by acclaimed keyboardist/composer Javier Santiago, whose groundbreaking album “Phoenix” garnered widespread acclaim and appeared on multiple Albums-of-the-Year lists. Javier will share his unique insights bridging the gap between jazz’s rich traditions and modern music’s ever-evolving landscape. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the indelible impact of jazz on genres like R&B, hip-hop, and electronic music and discover innovative ways to infuse their musical expressions with the spirit of jazz.
Javier Santiago is a visionary pianist and composer whose music speaks to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. With a deep appreciation for musical traditions, he fearlessly explores new sounds, technology, and concepts. While the piano remains his primary instrument, Javier’s compositions encompass various instrumentations, from big bands and string quartets to hip-hop beats and electronic elements. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, he immersed himself in the vibrant music community of the Twin Cities at an early age. Jazz became his passion in high school, where he honed his skills as a performer, composer, and producer. Selected as a fellow for the prestigious Brubeck Institute, Javier had the opportunity to study with renowned musicians and perform at acclaimed venues nationwide. He furthered his education at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, studying under jazz legends and establishing himself as a regular performer on the city’s jazz scene. With a diverse range of influences, Javier’s compositions reflect his mastery of various genres, including jazz, blues, hip-hop, indie rock, and world music. Javier is also an esteemed educator, arranger, and producer, whose musical journey is characterized by a relentless pursuit of innovation and a deep commitment to artistic expression.
