This ensemble features the deep grooves of Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, Cuba, Martinique, Colombia, Brazil, and other Caribbean/Latin American countries. Styles may include calypso/soca, son, reggae, ska, cumbia, choro, reggaeton, and others. Repertoire may include songs by both classic artists (Calypso Rose, The Skatalites, Bob Marley, Kassav’) and newer artists (Monsieur Periné, Cimafunk, Bixiga 70, and Lakou Mizik). Students learn the cultural context, interlocking rhythms, and lyrics of each tune. Emphasis is on developing the groove, listening, and playing together as a group. Please confirm your availability for the class performance before enrolling. This class is part of the year-long World Groove Ensemble series, which includes the African (winter) and New Orleans/Louisiana (spring) Ensembles; students are encouraged to take all three for continuity but may take individual classes. Open to vocalists and all instrumentalists.
Prerequisites: intermediate instrumental proficiency; ability to read charts and standard notation. Materials provided by the instructor.
Please note: This class culminates in a performance in the final week of the term (week 11). All Jazzschool student performances are free and open to the public!
