World Groove Ensemble: New Orleans & Louisiana

Explore the deep grooves of New Orleans funk and R&B, Cajun and zydeco, brass band, second-line, swamp boogie, and/or “trad jazz.” Sample artists include The Meters, Professor Longhair, Clifton Chenier, Irma Thomas, Dr. John, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, D.L. Menard, Sonny Landreth, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, etc. Emphasis is placed on listening and playing together as a group and on hearing how the core rhythms played by each instrument combine to create the overall groove. Students learn and discuss each song’s lyrics and cultural context. Open to vocalists and all instrumentalists. Arrangements provided by instructor.

Prerequisites: intermediate instrumental and/or vocal proficiency; ability to read charts and standard notation.

Note: N-95, KN-95, or KF-95 masks without valves must be worn in the classroom when not singing or playing a wind instrument.

Ensembles take place IN-PERSON at the California Jazz Conservatory.

About Jennifer Jolly

Jennifer Jolly is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and educator. She teaches keyboard classes and ensembles (Caribbean, African, New Orleans, minimalist, and improv) at the Jazzschool, clinics, camps, after-school programs, and her private studio. She currently performs on keyboards, melodica, guitar, and vocals with Jennifer Jolly & Friends, Pamela Rose’s show “Blues is a Woman,” Jean Fineberg’s JAZZphoria, Jean Fineberg’s The Party Monsters, and other Bay Area groups. Jennifer frequently performs as a guest with Tom Rigney & Flambeau and Chelle! & Friends; previous credits range from Barbara Dane to Phil Lesh.
